HODGE CLOSE

Hodge Close is a disused and flooded slate quarry/mine just north of Coniston in the Lake District National Park .  Overall, the quarry is approx. 100m x 50m on plan with an original worked depth from ground level of ~100m. In it's disused state, the water level is about 50m below ground level and significant rock falls from the sheer faces have partially in-filled the base of the quarry leaving a water depth of approx 27m

Hodge close is an intimidating place. The drive out of Coniston lets you know just how remote these sites are. As you drive to the site you can park and see what you are letting yourself in for. The green slate quarry walls rise straight up from the water 50m to the trees. The quarry is an enclosed hole in the ground and at first there seems to be no way in other than to abseil or hump your gear down a steep loose path. Access is gained via a tunnel hidden at the end of a stream.

This dive is for Dive Leaders and above (or VERY experienced Sports divers).  Please ask me for more details.

To make the most of full daylight and organising our kit onto the site I would request everyone be there for 9.30am so travelling up the night before is preferable (It's a 260 mile drive from Codicote!) Accommodation will be at the Burton Travel lodge (off the M6) at approx £29 per room/ per night (however they are running a sale in January 2010 where the rooms may be cheaper!)

A post dive curry that night and some gentler diving at Capernwray will be on offer on the Sunday, for those wanting to make a weekend of it.

Now closed - no further names will be taken.
